Pelton: McCollum Gets A C+ In His Second Summer League Game
ESPN.com's Kevin Pelton graded the performance of some of the "notable names" participating in Sunday's summer league contests, including Trail Blazers rookie guard CJ McCollum. After being awarded an "A-" for his performance
in Portland's 82-69 loss to the Suns
on Saturday, Pelton hits McCollum with a "C+"
for his 15-point, 5-assist effort in Sunday's loss to the Lakers ...
McCollum's line wasn't nearly as good as his debut Saturday, but he was better as a playmaker, handing out five assists against three turnovers. McCollum looked to pass and was fortunate not to face the same kind of pressure that led to turnovers on Saturday. McCollum's shot was off, as he missed four of his five attempts beyond the arc and was 5-of-12 inside the arc, but he continues to demonstrate the ability to create quality looks for himself.
Creating for others can be difficult at summer league, for various reasons, so it was a positive sign to see McCollum make the extra effort to get his teammates involved, even in a losing effort. As Pelton notes, McCollum has had little trouble getting good looks at the basket for himself in his first two summer league games, so the next step is proving he can do the same for his teammates.
