Every Second-Year Player, Including Lillard, On Portland's Summer League Roster

By caseyholdahl

The Trail Blazers announced their 2013 Las Vegas Summer League roster on Friday, while also announcing the team will begin practices on Tuesday, with their first game in Las Vegas that following Saturday against the Phoenix Suns. As expected, the team will feature second-year Trail Blazers Will Barton, Meyers Leonard, Joel Freeland and Victor Claver, as well as 2013 draft picks CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe.

What is a little surprising is seeing 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard on the roster, as one assumes no player has ever lead the NBA in minutes played followed by a stint at the Las Vegas Summer League a few months later. My guess is that Lillard won't actually play in any of Portland's five games in Las Vegas, but still wants the opportunity to get in some practice runs and build a little camaraderie with his new teammates, particularly McCollum, who he'll be sharing a backcourt with this season.

The team will be coached by current assistants Dale Osbourne, David Vanterpool and Nate Tibbetts, with Michael Peck, John McCullough and Tim Grass serving as assistants.

Along with the players under contract for the 2013-14 season, the Trail Blazers' summer league roster also includes center Dallas Lauderdale, who played last season for the Stampede and for Portland's 2012 Summer League team before that, and guard Dexter Strickland, who averaged 7.8 points and 4.2 assists last year at North Carolina and had a workout with the Trail Blazers during the run up to the 2013 Draft.

  1. I was thinking that because of the tournament at the end of the league, having Lillard around would bring stability to the group on the floor and would be very nice experience for him to have. Pseudo-playoff mindset.

  2. Having a name on the roster, and having the name play are two different things. It's a great pr move though.
