Trail Blazers Take Alex Len In ESPN.com Mock Draft
Six days out from the 2013 Draft, ESPN.com had five of their NBA Insiders -- Dave Telep, our friend Kevin Pelton, Fran Frachilla, David Thorpe and Amin Elhassan -- mock draft the first round
in the same way that you would perform, say, a fantasy football draft.
Telep ends up selecting at No. 10 for the Trail Blazers (after starting off the draft by selecting Nerlens Noel No. 1 for the Cavaliers) and ends up choosing Maryland center Alex Len ...
10. Portland Trail Blazers
The pick: Alex Len, Maryland Terrapins
This was the first "value pick" of our draft. There are many who think he's No. 1 for the Cavs and other teams. But he slid and Portland needed a big. It was a solid meshing of need and potential for a team ready to take that chance, especially at No. 10
One assumes the Trail Blazers would be ecstatic if Len, who, as Telep notes, is reportedly in play to go as high as the first pick, is still on the board at No. 10. While drafting a center who is coming off an ankle injury
might draw a few snickers here and there for obvious reasons, it would be very hard for Neil Olshey, who has said he doesn't believe in curses or superstition, to pass on likely the best player available who also fills a need. That's basically the dream scenario in a draft this lackluster.
And for what it's worth, Len did meet with the Trail Blazers in Tualatin
, so there's obviously some interest on both sides.
