Damian Lillard Unanimously Selected As 2012-13 NBA Rookie Of The Year

By caseyholdahl Posted in: Blazers, damianlillard
Damian Lillard has been named Kia Rookie of the Year for the 2012-13 NBA season by a unanimous vote. Lillard led all rookies in points (19.0 ppg), assists (6.5 apg) and 3-pointers made (185) while leading the entire NBA in total minutes (3,165).

Lillard wins Rookie of the Year after sweeping the Kia Rookie of the Month awards this season, joining Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Ralph Sampson as the only players in NBA history to do the same. Lillard joins Brandon Roy (2007) Sydney Wicks (1972) and Geoff Petrie (1971) as Trail Blazers to win Rookie of the Year honors. Lillard is just the fourth rookie to win the award unanimously.

PRAISE FROM PEERS

“Very rarely do you come in and have the respect of your teammates right off the bat, but he has it. That just tells you he has high character, he has great work ethic, and he has the talent and skill set to lead them.” -- Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City Thunder

“The big thing with Damian Lillard is he’s one of the best young point guards in the league, probably the best young point guard.” -- Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder

“With the numbers he’s putting up, he’s making a strong case for Rookie of the Year. It’s always good to see young point guards come in the league and
just take over like he’s doing.” -- Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers

“It’s hard not to like him. It’s tough to find savvy, talented young point guards. His play belies his experience. He plays like a veteran player.” -- Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat

“He’s aggressive, he’s not afraid of contact, but he’s got a real fine demeanor and understanding of what’s going on out on the court. He can shoot it and he can drive it. He’s a fine young player for Portland.” -- Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs

“He’s fantastic. Really fantastic. It wasn’t a game where he was just hot. A lot of players
get hot. I told him he was a bad boy. He was out there cooking with gasoline tonight.”
-- Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers
