Video: Will Barton Got One, Too

By caseyholdahl Posted in: 2012summerleague

The Trail Blazers moved to 2-1 for the Las Vegas Summer League after defeating the Atlanta Hawks 84-78 Thursday night. And the big story, as if you didn't already know, was the performance of Damian Lillard, who finished the night with 31 points on 11 of 22 shooting, seven assists, three rebounds and one monstrous dunk over Atlanta's Keith Benson.

But Portland's other two rookies had nice games as well. Meyers Leonard, feeling much better after dealing with a bout of garbage gut in Tuesday night's loss to the Rockets, finished one point shy of a double-double with a nine-point, 13-rebound performance (though committing just one foul might be his most impressive stat of the night).

And last but not least, Will Barton turned in his best performance of the Summer League, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes. Barton also finished with two steals, one of which turned was capped off by an And 1 dunk in transition, the video which you can see above. Barton's finish takes a backseat to Lillard's on this night, but it's still a great jam on its' own merits. Guys who are all arms and legs, like Barton, bring an aesthetic to dunking that makes for great replays.

  3. @D3P0W3LL:
I am not sure he will get his wt up, he is thin and wiry, we might have to deal with that. Nevertheless, I feel people will be sorry they didn't draft him earlier too.

  4. We'll that was a game by Barton if I've ever seen one. I'm kind of disappointed that Damian didn't play because I live in TX and it was one of only two shown on NBA TV from start til finish. It's kind of dumb that NBA TV didn't show more games of the number one rookie on the Rookie Ladder. Go Damian, Meyers, and Will.

I also find it kind of weird that we went from young to experienced to young again.?

  5. I was on board w/ Will b4 summer league but not like I am now! :) This guy IS gonna b a good player in the league; all he needs is pt. It wasn't the awesome dunk from Bost that had me sold on Barton (which I DID LOVE btw ;), it's his EXCEPTIONAL poise, LEADERship(not just for a ROOKIE but for ANY player; I know this is just summer league... but... ;), decision making, & passing in the last game of summer league that got me (u gotta look beyond the OTHER AWESOME stats that he put up! Hahaha!); he'd BEEN having good games throughout BUT the last game was something else! We got an absolute steal in the draft & ESPECIALLY @ #40 (I stand corrected Cory, I thought even in this draft we wouldn't b able to get any1 good/ok @ this pick; I was VERY wrong ;) Some guys in the NBA, u need to give them literally years of pt to sort of "get it;" Barton is a fast learner (if u give him years of pt... oh man will he b good!) & also, if he doesn't hit his 1st shots, LEAVE HIM IN , he WILL produce (only the greats do this, every1 else just hits a few & then they peter out)! His conditioning is VERY good but to play heavy NBA minutes, I'm sure he'll have to get his conditioning up just a bit more but not much more, he's close to NBA shape! :) BTW, we need Dee Bost on our team; trade Luke for a trade exception or something to ensure that we have room for Bost! He's a good/smart player. If we don't pick him up, we'll regret it.

  6. @Simpson: I thing I agree with you on Barton; I am afraid with Batum, Matthews, EWill, Claver and even Nolan, he won't get much playing time. but if he goes to the farm league where they play the same plays and same type coaches, then he would learn much faster.
I also agree with trading Babbitt and other assets and get not necessarily Bost but another established center. like two of our players doesn't have a guaranteed contract could be waivered to make room for Joel.; Nevertheless, I like our team just fines the way it is.

  7. I hear ya Hg; I HOPE Barton gets pt bc he DESERVES it! (AND I PROMISE the team WILL benefit from doing so! :) Guy's got all the things I said above + I think he's VERY good for team chemistry on/off court like most of our other fan favs (ppl that haven't seen him play WILL love him! ;) MOST importantly, I BELIEVE he IS a difference maker in games. I agree w/ u Hg w/ sending him to the Stampede for seasoning (I ALSO want this to happen bc I can drive 10min. to go watch him! Hahaha! ;) & then once every1 sees how dominant he is (won't take long ;), he'll b ready for long NBA minutes! :)

I wanted 2 pull for Luke but I saw what I saw & it didn't look good :( Even IF Luke marginally improved, Dee Bost's plays can't b denied (dunno if u got a chance to watch him but he needs to b on our team) & I would've STILL said this if it came down to either Luke or Bost... my answer's gonna b the same every time & that's a HELL YES on Bost! I'll say it again, we WILL regret it if we don't pick him up.

@Casey, pls pls pls let the FO know that it is critical that Will Barton b giving copious amounts of pt bc he's is gonna b not only a fan fav BUT he WILL verifiably make a difference in games & we NEED Bost on our team! Thank you Casey :)

  8. I watched Bost play twice, he does look good, but he is a PG and I am not sure he would break the rotation; of course I don't know that much about him and Summer League is different then the NBA, so I will have to take your word for it.
You know Babbitt tries hard and he is a gym rat, but he just doesn't seem to be that skilled at any thing other then shooting 3's and many players can do that and do many other things too
