HoopsHype Asks Batum: 'Are You Going to Be Upset If You Have To Go Back To Portland?'

By caseyholdahl Posted in: freeagency, NicolasBatum

Jorge Sierra, the man behind NBA super site HoopsHype, posted a Q&A with Trail Blazers restricted free agent Nicolas Batum about free agency and the upcoming Olympics in London. It's worth a complete read, but the part Trail Blazers fans will probably be the most interested in pertains to Batum's ongoing free agent negotiations:
Your agent has been very vocal about how you want to go to Minnesota, but you haven't spoken at all about the issue.

Nicolas Batum: I just want to focus on the National Team right now. That's his job, to get a contract done. That's why I got an agent, that's his job.

Are you going to be upset if you have to go back to Portland?

Nicolas Batum: No.

What kind of player do you see yourself becoming in the NBA from an individual standpoint?

Nicolas Batum: I just want to be a leader. A very good player and that's why I'm working every day since I was born. I don't want to just. be in the NBA. I want to have success as a player, but also with my team. I want to be a special player.

Do you have a feeling about where you're going to play next season?

Nicolas Batum: I don't know. We'll see in a couple of days.
Free agent contracts can be officially signed tonight at 9 PM, Portland time. Teams have three days to match offers to restricted free agents. Batum reportedly has an offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

And if you missed it yesterday, he's a HoopsHype Q&A with Joel Freeland, whose rights are owned by the Trail Blazers.

  1. I knew Batum would not be disappointed playing for Portland. I am sure the Blazers will match as they never gave any indication that they wouldn't and they still refer to Batum as one of the core players.
If we do land Joel Freeland, and maybe resign Joel Przybilla we won't be hurting to bad for centers and rebounders, of course JJ would help also.

  2. i've maintained for the last few days that the push to sign with Minnesota was more about looking for a new opportunity rather than trying to get out of portland. i truly believe that. unfortunately, there have been those on twitter (and perhaps other social media) who have been overly critical of Nic, as well as his girlfriend, and sent some criticisms which are not consistent with those within the best fan base in the league.

@Hg: while the news about the pacers matching Hibbert's offer was disappointing, it wasn't all that unexpected, despite how hopeful we all were. the silver lining could be that Meyers gets more of an opportunity to develop into the center of the future. we still have limitless options, but i think it opens the door to the Thrilla to be re-signed, as well as a reasonable possibility we bring back J.J.

then again, we have no idea what other acquisitions or trades Olshey may be considering.

  3. Hey Miss Kassandra: I feel the same way you do, of course, I got most of my thoughts from you on the last update Blazer TV. I could read just parts of your comments, because they were coming in so fast that my old slow eyes couldn't keep up.
I still think going after Hibbert was a smoke screen to get Collison; now I know you are not a Collison fan, but if cheap enough he will give us a veteran presents at PG, which we need.

What do you think of making a bid for Brand if they amnicize him. he has got a few good miles left as a back up big and could teach our young-uns some tricks.
Like you I haven't the foggiest what tricks Olsey has in mind, but I can't believe he didn't have an idea that Indy was going to match, I just can't wait to see.
I am almost positive, not quite, because only fools are positive, that Olsey will not sit on his hands and his assets. pun intended, without some big plan.

  4. AS @APkrawczynski points out, Wolves have movable pieces to get under. If no Batum match, need to move ~$4mil for Roy and more for Shved. ... and that would be *after* amnestying Darko, cutting Miller and Webster and renouncing Tolliver. -Hollinger

i am not so sure whether he will sign that offer tonight
