Kawakami: Trail Blazers Could Take Austin Rivers At No. 6

By caseyholdahl Posted in: 2012draft, draft2012

The consensus in the media seems to be that at No. 6, the Trail Blazers will select either Damian Lillard or Andre Drummond, but according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Portland might have someone else in mind:
Kawakami also repeated this claim on yesterday's Bald Faced Truth With John Canzano. Rivers worked out for the Trail Blazers on June 20 in a guard-heavy workout. He's been projected to go just outside of the Top 10, so Portland selecting him at No. 6 wouldn't be much of a surprise. He'd certainly fill a need.

I do question whether the Trail Blazers would pass on Harrison Barnes, even if they liked Rivers, as Kawakami's "NBA source" implies. Barnes did workout for the Raptors, who have the No. 8 pick, so maybe it's possible his camp thinks he might slip. He did not work out for the Trail Blazers.

  1. I wouldn't hate taking Rivers at 6. It may seem high now, but when we look back on this draft, Austin's going to be one of the gems of this draft. I still would rather take MKG or Lillard if either was available at 6 and trade back up from 11 to get Rivers. Call it a hunch, but I think Rivers will be an All-Star.

  3. Casey: I do agree, I can't see Portland passing on Barnes to get Rivers. It may be the fact that Barnes doesn't want to play for Portland, but I could think 24 other players I would rather have.

@DHawes22, You have been working overtime lately on your blogs, so I will forgive you for your brain taking a temporary leave of absence LOL. Rivers may be a All-Star since it is a popularity contest, and he is the son of Doc Rivers. If fact I wonder if you were thinking Rivers as the player or Rivers the son of Doc. Anyway from all I have read he is a bigger ball hog then Jamal was, his upside was compared to Jamal's and his low side was compared to Jamal. That is all I need to say thumbs down. How accurate is your hunches been lately LOL.

  4. @HG I love your retort to Dustin.

Austin Rivers is one of the most selfish and cocky players to enter the draft. If he struggles or sits the bench I can expect big time chemistry issues with him. He should be avoided in the lottery.
