In November of 1992, the Trail Blazers launched Rip City Magazine with
the goal of "capturing all the excitement and action of Portland's 23rd
season, neatly packaged for you to read and review time and time again,
now and in future years."
Here we are almost 20 future years later, and Rip City Magazine lives
on. And this summer, we'll dive into the archives to offer up some of
the most memorable covers and stories from nearly two decades of RCM.
We had planned on releasing the Rip City Magazine Rewind's in chronological order, but after hearing that Arvydas Sabonis is going to be in Portland starting on August 18, we decided to move up Sabonis' covers. Not that I needed much reason to highlight more Sabonis stories.
In the first Sabonis cover story, "
Sabas Speaks Out!", Arvydas' occasional interpreter Edis Jurcys interviews the bigman in Lithuanian before transcribing said interview into English for we Americans who have yet to grasp Sabas' native tongue. The interview was conducted during Arvydas' second season in Portland, so much of it has to do with how he's getting along in the States, the language barrier and dealing with the media. There's also some great stuff regarding Sabas' affection for ZZ Top, his kids' taste in movies, his teammates and how the ball sometimes has a mind of it's own.
