The Trail Blazers on August 18th are going to honor one of the most beloved Blazers of all time. They will honor him after he is inducted into the Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. Trail Blazers general manager Bucky Buckwalter saw in 1986 that the young man from Kaunas, Lithuania might be the best center in the world. Arvydas Sabonis is his name.

Sometimes the draft is not really fair for teams that trade for draft picks years in advance, thinking, “This is the year we will improve our team, get out of the lottery and make the playoffs.” This is not that year. A lot of the undergrads and international players have decided against declaring for the draft early. Usually when that happens, the depth of the draft is not the greatest.

I must admit, last week my thoughts were not entirely on the Portland Trail Blazers. As you might know, my son, Mike, is the head coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. He is coaching in the most competitive college league in the NCAA, the Big East.
