Those test results will prove what the Trail Blazers knew—that the kids at West Powellhurst are good students and especially good readers. There are churches and parks with rolling hills just a stone's throw of the one-level brick school. Whether by design or happenstance, it's a place that feels safe.

And when rookies Damian Lillard and Will Barton arrived with Blaze The Trail Cat at Montclair Elementary's gymnasium for a Kia "Read To Achieve" assembly, they were greeted by a legion of kids whose only care in the world seemed to be getting the attention of an NBA player. It was hard to tell if any of the students were aware of the horrific events that took place in Newton, but if they did, none showed it. They were too excited at the prospect of getting a high-5 from Lillard and Barton while screaming out answers to Trail Cat Trivia at the top of their lungs.

Growing up in those conditions, one quickly learns the importance of owning a good, warm coat.

While it doesn't get as cold here in Oregon, the omnipresent rain, coupled with temperatures which are still rather cold by most any standard, makes a good winter coat as important a commodity here as it is in Madison. Which is one of the reasons why Matthews, for the third-straight year, has teamed up with Fred Meyer for a winter coat drive benefiting the Portland Activities League.

It’s for this reason the Portland Trail Blazers and Hands On Greater Portland partner each year to present the Heart of the Community Awards.
Nolan Smith has been in pressure situations before. After all, he headlined at a top-flight high school program at Oak Hill Academy before playing four years at Duke, the preeminent college hoops program in the world. He's won National Championships and has been named First Team All American, honors that are typically bestowed upon those who have the ability to remain cool and calm under stressful conditions.

But the ability to deal with pressure in one situation doesn't necessarily transfer over to another, as Nolan experienced first-hand Monday night at the OnPoint Community Credit Union Celebrity Spelling Bee at the Portland Art Museum. On stage in front of a few hundred people, likely the smallest crowd he's performed in front of in years, Nolan stumbled while trying to spell "panzer," mistakenly spelling it with an "S" instead of a "Z."

That motivation could come in the form of an inspiring pre-game speech, an animated discussion during a timeout or a one-on-one post-game meeting. One way or another, Coach McMillan is going to figure out a way to get his players focused and ready to compete.

So McMillan knows firsthand the difficulties of inspiring greatness on a day-to-day basis, which is one of the reasons why he, along with Blaze the Trail Cat, visited McKay High School in Salem on October 28 to show their admiration for the strides the students and staff have made in improving their standardized test scores.
