Portland capped a stellar season by winning the Western Conference championship and taking on the defending champion Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals. The Trail Blazers compiled the league's second best record, 59-23, including a 24-17 road mark.

They gained momentum as the season progressed, winning 21 of their last 26 games, a run that included a 10-game winning streak and a sweep of a four-games-in-five-nights eastern road swing. After brushing aside Dallas in three games in the playoff's opening round, the Blazers battled to a semifinals win over San Antonio.

That series featured two big homecourt overtime victories, including a 108-105 thriller in the seventh and deciding game. The Blazers captured their second Western Conference crown when they downed Phoenix in six games, with the series decider a 112-109 cliff-hanger on the Suns' floor.

Portland appeared to be on its way to a second world title when it split the first two games with the defending champion Pistons in Detroit. But those hopes were dashed when they lost three straight at home, with the last two setbacks coming by three and two points respectively.

Clyde Drexler was selected on the All-NBA 3rd team and Buck Williams on the All- Defensive 1st team . . . Drexler represented Portland for the fourth time in five years at the NBA All-Star Game . . . Williams was eighth in the NBA in FG percentage (.548) and 10th in rebounding (9.8 rpg) . . . Drazen Petrovic was third in three-point shooting (.459) . . . Terry Porter finished sixth
in free throw percentage (.892) and tied for seventh in assists (9.1 apg).
