For only the second time in the decade-long tenure of Coach Jack Ramsay, the Trail Blazers failed to win more games than they lost, finishing at 40-42. Still, they made it into post-season play for the ninth time in ten seasons. But Portland couldn't get past the first round in the playoffs, being eliminated by Denver in four games.

Offensively, the Blazers were among the tops in the league, averaging 115.1 ppg, behind only Los Angeles and Dallas. But they were near the bottom defensively giving up an average of 114.0 points per contest. From all appearances in late January, the Blazers were enroute to another solid season. They were nine games above .500 on January 25 (28-19) after beating the Kings in Sacramento following a double-OT win over Seattle two nights earlier.

Then, things went downhill---fast. They lost 15 of their next 16 games including a string of 12 setbacks in a row, the second longest run without a victory in the franchise's 16 seasons. They won only 12 of their final 35 games and were just 10-8 at home in that stretch.

Loss of center Sam Bowie, who missed 44 games including the last 41, had a significant impact. As a rookie the season before, Bowie led the team in rebounding and had established himself as one of the league's top shot-blockers. He underwent season-ending surgery on his leg on February 16.

Clyde Drexler was selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game; he scored 10 points and had four assists and four rebounds in 15 minutes . . . Kiki Vandeweghe ranked 6th in the league in scoring (24.8 ppg) . . . Jim Paxson was fourth in FT percentage (.889) and Vandeweghe eighth (.869) . . . Drexler ranked third in steals (2.63 spg) and 10th in assists (8.0 apg).
