Biggest news of the 1984-85 season was the blockbuster trade that took place during the summer. To acquire Kiki Vandeweghe, the NBA's No. 3 scorer the previous season with a 29.4 ppg average, the Blazers sent to Denver Calvin Natt, Lafayette Lever and Wayne Cooper plus two draft choices.

Despite the added firepower which boosted Portland to fourth in the league's scoring race with a 115.5 ppg average and give them a plus 3.4 ppg scoring advantage over their foes (fifth in the NBA), the Blazers finished the regular season 42-40, down six wins from the year before.

Not being able to win consistently away from Memorial Coliseum haunted the Blazers. They were 12-29 on the road, their worst travel record since the 1979-80 campaign. Portland went into the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons with the west's No. 5 seed.

And, for the second year in a row, the Blazers advanced to the conference semifinals, disposing of No. 4 Dallas in four games in the opening round. But their second round foe was the red-hot Los Angeles Lakers who won the series matchup in five games.

The Lakers went on to capture the 1985 NBA title. Seven Blazers ended the season with double-digit scoring averages, led by Vandeweghe's 22.4 ppg.and followed by Mychal Thompson (18.4), Jim Paxson (17.9) and Clyde Drexler (17.2).

Sam Bowie was named to the NBA All-Rookie team, the eighth Trail Blazer in franchise history to be so honored . . . Bowie blocked 203 shots in 76 games, a 2.67 bpg average, the third highest in the NBA and the second-most ever by a Portland player . . . Kiki Vandeweghe ranked second in the league in free throw shooting accuracy, making .896 of his attempts (369 of 412) . . .Clyde Drexler was eighth in steals with a 2.63 per game average.
