The Trail Blazers posted the second-best record in the west (48-34), a two-victory improvement over the previous season's mark and good enough to nail down the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Their impressive 33-8 homecourt record was the best in the NBA; they were 15-1 going into January and didn't lose their third game at home until February 12, being
    24-3 at that juncture.

On March 16, Portland and Chicago went four overtimes before the Bulls pulled out a 156-155 victory. The game, the highest scoring in franchise history, lasted a club-record 3 hours and 24 minutes. Jim Paxson scored a career-high 41 points in a losing cause.

The long ordeal didn't seem to faze the Blazers. They returned to the court less than 24 hours later and outscored Golden State, 133-96, a victory than launched them on an eight-game winning streak, their longest of the year.

Jack Ramsay became the second winningest coach in NBA history on March 23 after his team defeated Phoenix, 124-98. He finished the year with 703 career victories, second only to Red Auerbach of Boston. Portland converted a team-record .505 from the field for the season, the league's fourth best mark. The second place finish in the west went for naught in the playoffs. The Blazers lost out to sixth-seeded Phoenix in the first round, 3-2.

Guard Jim Paxson became the third Trail Blazer to be named an NBA all-star, being selected 2nd team All-NBA . . . Paxson also was selected to play in his second consecutive NBA All-Star Game, this time scoring 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 14 minutes . . . Calvin Natt was fifth in the league in FG percentage, hitting at .583, second-highest ever by a Trail Blazer.
