Three losses---two of them on the basketball court---clouded an otherwise outstanding season for the Trail Blazers who recorded 59 victories to match their second-best best finish in franchise history. The biggest setback came May 5, just two days before the team opened its semifinal playoff series against Utah, when popular assistant coach Bill Musselman lost a six-month battle with a rare disease, primary systemic amyloidosis. Two weeks earlier, the Blazers lost their regular season finale at home to Denver, 96-95, and failed to post the franchise's second 60-win season.
But the hardest hit happened June 4 in L.A. when Portland came within one quarter of making the club's fourth trip to the NBA Finals. Leading, 73-58, early in the fourth period of the deciding Western Conference Championship game, the Blazers were outscored 31-11 in the last 11 minutes as the Lakers went on to win, 89-85, and advance to the Finals.
A lot of good things happened before that. A balanced Blazers team made it to the playoffs for the 18th consecutive year and the 23rd time in 24 campaigns by posting the league's second-best record, 59-23.
They started off with their best November in history, going 13-3, and were 12-2 in February, the best record ever for that month. The latter was part of a 27-4 Blazers run. Portland posted its best road record in history, 29-12; was 21-7 overall against the seven other Western playoff teams; had the third best defense in the league; shot an NBA-best 47% from the field, and was second in point differential, outscoring opponents by an average of 6.4 ppg.
Scottie Pippen was selected on NBA's All-Defense 2nd team. Mike Dunleavy was named NBA Coach of the Month in November after guiding the team to a 13-3 start, including 8-2 on the road. Rasheed Wallace was fifth in the league in field goal percentage. Wallace was selected to play in his first NBA All-Star Game, recording 9 points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes.
