The Trail Blazers made it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1992 and posted the league's third best-regular season record (35-15) in a lockout-shortened slate that beganin February and ended in May. After the first two months, Portland boasted the league's best record at 23-5 and was 14-1 at home.
Mike Dunleavy was NBA Coach of the Month for March after his team posted the most wins ever for the month (15-3) and matched the most for any month in club history. April's record of 10-4 equaled the franchise's highest number of wins for that month. The Blazers won nine in a row on their own floor before losing, the best start at home since 1977-78, and their overall homecourt record of 22-3 equaled the league's best for the season.
The best run of the season came in early March when they went 6-0 in a challenging eight-day span, including back-to-back overtime wins at home vs. Utah and on the road at Sacramento, and a three-game sweep of a rare back-to-back-to-back set of games.
After sweeping the Phoenix Suns in three games in the playoff's First Round, Portland upset No. 2-seeded Utah in the WC Semifinals, taking the Jazz in six games. Hopes for a shot at a second league title were dashed by eventual NBA champion San Antonio which captured all four WC Finals matchups.
Mike Dunleavy was named NBA Coach of the Year, and forward Brian Grant winner of the league's J. Walter Kennedy Award for outstanding community service and charitable work. Rasheed Wallace was sixth in the NBA in field goal percentage, and Walt Williams fourth in three-point shooting.
