The Trail Blazers set a club record for December, going 13-2, part of a stretch when they won 14 of 15 games. And, they finished the season by winning 12 of their last 16 games  and 16 of their last 22, including the capturing their final three on the road. Those runs helped boost the final
record to 45-37, seven victories better than the previous season.

Balanced scoring and a relatively injury-free season were contributing factors in the improvement. Seven Blazer regulars averaged in double-digit scoring, led by second-year guard Jim Paxson's 17.1 ppg and Mychal Thompson's 17.0 ppg. Rookie Kelvin Ransey took over the starting point guard role in November and ended the season with a club-record 555 assists, the league's seventh highest total for the year.

For the fourth straight year since winning the title in 1977 Portland exited the playoffs after one round but only after a hard-fought best-of-three series with Kansas City. The Kings took the first one in overtime, 98-97.

The Blazers came back to win Game 2, also in OT, 124-119, with Mychal Thompson scoring a Portland playoff record 40 points. KC clinched the series with a 104-95 victory. In that loss, the Blazers shot 54 percent from the floor and converted two more field goals than the Kings but were
only five-of-eight from the line, playoff lows for the club.

Kelvin Ransey was named to the NBA All-Rookie team. Kermit Washington for the second straight year was selected on the NBA's All-Defensive second team. Ransey was seventh in the league in assists (6.9 apg); Washington sixth in FG percentage (.569); Billy Ray Bates 10th in FT percentage (.854); Mychal Thompson eighth in blocked shots (2.15 bpg).
