    The Trail Blazers rattled off two eight-game winning streaks during the season then captured 10 of their last 13 contests to post a 53-29 record for the year, second only to the 58-years earlier by the 1977-78 team. The 53 victories equaled the NBA's fifth highest total for the year.

    With last year's scoring leader Kiki Vandeweghe out of action a total of 44 games season back spasms, Clyde Drexler took over and averaged a franchise record 27.0 ppg. A three-time winner of Player of the Week honors, Clyde was fifth in the voting for the league MVP honors and was the first to get All-NBA recognition since teammate Jim Paxson did it in 1984.

    Kevin Duckworth, who took over the center position when Steve Johnson was slowed by tendinitis in his knees, was named the league's most improved player, raising his scoring average to 15.8 ppg from 5.4 as a rookie. He started the last 46 games and Portland was 31-15 during that run.

    Clyde Drexler was named to the All-NBA 2nd team and played in the NBA All-Star Game, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in 15 minutes . . . Steve Johnson also was selected to play in the All-Star Game but did not participate because of an injury

    Kevin Duckworth was named the NBA's Most Improved Player . . . Drexler was sixth in the league in scoring (27.0 ppg) and fifth in steals (2.51 spg) . . . Terry Porter was 4th in assists (10.1 apg) . . . Kiki Vandewege was 10th in FT percentage (.878).
