    The Trail Blazers unleashed the most potent offense in the league and won nine more games than the previous season, helping earn new head man Mike Schuler NBA Coach of the Year honors.

    Schuler, an assistant at Milwaukee, became Portland sixth head coach on May 28, replacing Jack Ramsay who had guided the Blazers to a 453-367 record and nine playoff appearances, including the 1977 NBA title.

    The 1986-87 Blazers averaged a league-best 117.9 points per contest, fueled by Kiki Vandeweghe and Clyde Drexler, who averaged 26.9 ppg and 21.7 ppg respectively.

    Vandeweghe's was the highest ever by a Trail Blazer. Six other players averaged in double numbers as Portland finished 49-33, the most wins since 1977-78. Center Sam Bowie was lost for the season after suffering a fractured right tibia in the fifth game.

    Mike Schuler was named NBA Coach of the Year . . . Kiki Vandeweghe led the NBA in 3-point percentage (.481), was fifth in scoring (26.9 ppg), and seventh in FT percentage (.886) . . .Terry Porter was fifth in assists (8.9 apg) . . . Clyde Drexler was fifth and Porter tenth in steals (2.49 and 1.99 spg respectively) . . . Steve Johnson was 8th in FG percentage (.556).
