For the first time since winning the NBA championship in 1977, the Trail Blazers advanced beyond one round of action in post-season play. Finishing the regular season at 46-36, the most wins sincethe 1977-78 campaign, the Blazers took two straight from the fourth-seeded Seattle SuperSonics in the playoff's first round to advance to the Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers. The defending world champions prevailed in that series, four games to one.
Portland, 31-10 in the friendly confines of Memorial Coliseum, sustained a 15-game homecourt win streak from mid-November through mid-January. It equaled the second longest home string in franchise history.
One of the keys to the success of the 1982-83 season was a relatively injury-free run by the six core players in Coach Jack Ramsay's rotation---Jim Paxson, Calvin Natt, Mychal Thompson, Kenny Carr, Wayne Cooper and Fats Lever.
Collectively, they missed only eight games because of hurts the entire season. Paxson (21.7 ppg) and Natt (20.4 ppg) were 17th and 23rd respectively among the league's scoring leaders. Lever, in his first season, led the Blazers in assists with a 5.3 apg average and was 10th in the NBA in steals.
Jim Paxson was selected to play in the 1983 NBA All-Star Game; Lafayette Lever was 10th in the NBA in steals (1.89 spg).
