The Trail Blazers picked up where they left off the previous season when they were in the NBA Finals and captured world-wide basketball attention. They posted the league's best record, 63-19, the most wins ever by the franchise. They opened by winning their first 11 games and 19 of their first 20. They took their first eight away from home, extending a road winning streak over two seasons to 12 which equaled the second longest in NBA history.
By mid-February, they were 41-9 overall and 26-2 at home. And they continued their dominant league role by winning a club-record 16 straight before having that streak broken with a season-ending loss at Phoenix.
Coach Rick Adelman's club was on track to bring Portland its second NBA Trophy. The Blazers defeated Seattle in the opening round of the playoffs then stopped Utah in five games to advance to the Western Conference title round for the second year in a row. But there hopes were dashed when Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers ousted them in six games.
Bucky Buckwalter, vice president of basketball operations, was named NBA Executive of the Year. Clyde Drexler was named All-NBA2nd team. Buck Williams was selected on the All-Defensive 1st team. Rick Adelman was NBA Coach of the Month in November and April, head coach of the West in the All-Star Game, and was runner-up for Coach of the Year honors. For the first time, three Trail Blazers represented Portland in the All-Star Game---Clyde Drexler, Kevin Duckworth and Terry Porter. Williams led the NBA in FG percentage (.602). Porter and Danny Ainge were fourth and sixth respectively in 3-point FG % (.415 and .406).
