2008-2009 Team Bio

2008-09 was a year in which the Trail Blazers returned to NBA prominence. The Trail Blazers won 54 games, the fifth highest in franchise history, good enough to earn the title of co-division champions of the Northwest and a first round matchup against the Houston Rockets, marking the first time the team had reached the playoffs in six years.
As the season rolled on, the Trail Blazers continually got better. After being put behind the eight-ball with 16 of their first 24 games on the road, Portland staggered out of the box at 1-3, but quickly turned their fortune around by going 11-3 from November 6th to December 3rd. A team defined by consistency, the Trail Blazers longest losing streak was only three games, which only occurred once. Knowing the right time to peak, the Trail Blazers finished the season as the NBA's hottest by winning 16 of their final 25 games, including 10 of their last 11.
Coach Nate McMillan continued the trend of increasing wins with each passing season. The 54 wins were a 13 game improvement over the 41-41 record the prior year and good enough to earn him the honor of being named the Western Conference's NBA Coach of the Month for April. A month in which saw the Trail Blazers go a staggering 7-1.
The 08-09 season also saw Portland break another long drought as Brandon Roy was named to the All-NBA 2nd Team, the first time any such Trail Blazer has made an All-NBA Team since Clyde Drexler made 1st Team All-NBA during the 91-92 season. A combination of Roy's 22.6 points per game average and Portland's 32-30 mark at the All-Star break was more than sufficient for the coaches to once again recognize Brandon as an NBA All-Star for the second time in a row. Brandon was also named Western Conference Player of the Week during the weeks of December 1st and April 13th.
Other season notables included seeing Rudy Fernandez breaking the NBA rookie record for three-point field goals made in a single season with 159, named to the All-Rookie 2nd Team, and playing in the Rookie-Sophomore game at All-Star weekend with teammate Greg Oden. Speaking of Oden, the former 2007 #1 overall pick played in 61 games during his first NBA season. He posted averages of 8.9 points, 7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game.
