$20,000 donation will support one-on-one literacy support for youth
PORTLAND, Ore. (April 17, 2013) – The Trail Blazers and Wells Fargo have teamed up to support Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) by donating $20,000 to the nonprofit. A check was presented to SMART at halftime of tonight’s regular season finale at the Rose Garden. This marks the sixth consecutive season the partners have teamed up to support SMART, which has resulted in a total donation of $120,000.
The combined donation will provide one-on-one literacy support to 66 children in Oregon’s school system. The children will also receive 920 books to take home and utilize over the course of the year as a result of the donation.
Wells Fargo donated a designated amount to SMART for each Trail Blazers “SMART Play of the Game”, an in-game highlight which is shown on the Wells Fargo Big Screen at every home game. The total donation reached $10,000 by the end of the season. The Trail Blazers matched the $10,000, resulting in a $20,000 total donation to SMART.
“SMART continues to provide valuable assists to our community’s youngest readers, ensuring that they will have the skills necessary to be successful learners,” said Trail Blazers Vice President of Community Relations Traci Rose. “It’s an honor to highlight their work and celebrate these students with our Trail Blazers and Wells Fargo families.”
During the halftime presentation, Rose joined Wells Fargo Regional President Don Pearson to present the $20,000 check to SMART Executive Director Chris Otis.
“The ability to read is a crucial factor in determining a child’s success in school and life,” Pearson said. “We support the work of SMART, which is helping Oregon’s children reach their full potential.”
The Trail Blazers and Wells Fargo both have employees who volunteer for SMART. Each week during the school year, volunteers from both organizations read one-on-one with young Oregonians to inspire a love of reading. To learn how to help, visit, and Start Making A Reader Today.
