NBA Family Continues The Fight Against HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day
12/01/12

As part of the NBA Cares Season of Giving, the NBA family will continue the fight against HIV/AIDS in support of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. Through a variety of partnerships, including the Kaiser Family Foundation's Greater Than AIDS campaign, GBCHealth, and (RED)TM, the league and its teams will generate awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS education and research through special oncourt apparel and in-arena activation.
In recognition of World AIDS Day, players from all 28 NBA and NBA D-League teams competing on Dec. 1 will wear red-and-white adidas shooting shirts featuring the NBA Logoman wearing an AIDS awareness ribbon along with red headbands and wristbands, and coaches will wear red ribbons. In addition, the NBA TV studio will turn red in honor of World AIDS Day and will feature two NBA games: Brooklyn at Miami and Sacramento at L.A. Clippers.
“So many lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS,” said Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook. “Silence can be the biggest challenge to fighting this devastating disease. Together, we can lend our voices to help generate more awareness and knowledge to everyone.”
NBA and NBA D-League teams will raise additional awareness in-arena by providing fans with educational materials and donation opportunities and through in-game messaging and public service announcements (PSAs), including a Greater Than AIDS PSA featuring NBA stars Pau Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers), Al Horford (Atlanta Hawks), Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder), and WNBA star Candice Wiggins (Minnesota Lynx).
“The NBA family has a long history of supporting HIV/AIDS research, education, and awareness, and we are proud to continue these efforts through our recognition of World AIDS Day,” said NBA Community Relations Senior Vice President Todd Jacobson. “By partnering with great organizations, such as the Kaiser Family Foundation, GBCHealth and (RED), the NBA family hopes to mobilize our fans to unite and join us in the fight against HIV/AIDS.”
As part of the NBA’s longstanding commitment to supporting social causes related to health and wellness, the league and its players have supported HIV/AIDS research and education in a variety of ways including public service announcements, leadership with GBCHealth, HIV/AIDS testing and grassroots activities, education workshops, and charitable donations.
