PORTLAND, Ore.
– Trail Blazers founder
Harry Glickman
will be recognized at the Oregon Historical Society at the fourth annual History Makers of Oregon Dinner on Thursday, Sept. 27th at 6:30 p.m.
Glickman will join
Gerry Frank
,
Kathryn Harrison
and
Norma Paulus
as this year’s honorees. The award is given annually to contemporary individuals who have made a significant impact in their field of work or service during their lifetime. These individuals with ties to Oregon have made history through scientific discovery and exploration, innovation in business, communications, the arts, or service in their communities.
Glickman was the driving force that founded the Trail Blazers in 1970 and then oversaw the franchise’s growth over its first 24 years, serving as executive vice president, general manager and president. During his tenure as the Trail Blazers’ leader, he helped construct the roster that earned the Trail Blazers their first NBA Championship in 1977. He also guided the Trail Blazers business operations to the all-time professional sports record of 814 consecutive sellouts. Glickman retired as team president in 1994. Since his retirement, Glickman has served as the team’s president emeritus..
Ten years prior to founding the Trail Blazers, Glickman brought professional hockey to Portland by founding the Portland Buckaroos in 1960. The Buckaroos were ultimately the reason for the construction of the Memorial Coliseum, which later served as the Trail Blazers home arena for 25 years. When Glickman was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, he was dubbed Oregon’s “Father of Pro Sports”..
After graduating from the University of Oregon and serving in the Army, the Lincoln High School graduate got his start in the sports and entertainment industry promoting top-ranked boxing matches, National Football League exhibition games and Harlem Globetrotters games in the 1950s. He even dabbled in music, promoting northwest tours of Judy Garland and Liberace. In 1959 he took on the role of general manager of Multnomah Stadium..
Glickman’s decorated career includes enshrinements in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Oregon School of Journalism Hall of Fame. In 1992 he received the prestigious First Citizen Award for civic leadership in Portland. He’s also received the University of Oregon’s Distinguished Alumni Award..
Oregon History Makers honorees are selected each year in the categories of architecture and design, arts and culture, education, environment and sustainability, health and medicine, industry, law, literature and scholarship, media and communications, public service, sciences, social service, sports, and technology and innovation.
