Trail Blazers Face Nuggets In First Division Battle

  1. Written by: sarahhecht

The Portland Trail Blazers host the Denver Nuggets tonight at the Rose Garden in the third game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm with the match-up airing on KGW and broadcast over the airwaves on 750 AM The Game.

Portland and Denver both head into the night with a 2-0 record. Last season, the two split their series 2-2, with each team collecting both wins on its home floor.

The night will mark the first return of former Trail Blazers Andre Miller and Rudy Fernandez since their departure in June as part of a three-team trade on draft night. Portland acquired Raymond Felton, who played a partial season in Denver, in the swap. Andre Miller tallied 25 points and 17 assists in his first two games back with the Nuggets while Rudy Fernandez scored 19 points in his 60 mins of play.

In the four-game series of 2010-2011 the Trail Blazers shot 41.6 percent from the field to the Nuggets’ 44.6 percent. In their two games thus far this year Denver put up 53.5 percent against the Utah Jazz and 49.4 percent against the Dallas Mavericks while the Trail Blazers shot 41.2 percent against Philadelphia 76ers and 44.7 percent against the Sacramento Kings.

LaMarcus Aldridge leads Portland through two games with 49 points and 15 rebounds. He averaged a team-high 21.0 points and series bests of 11.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals against Denver last season.

Of the players who played in more than one game for the Nuggets against Portland in 2010-11 and are currently on the team’s roster, Nene led Denver with averages of 15.8 points and 8.8 rebounds. In his two games this season he’s played 23 minutes in each, scoring 8 points against the Mavericks and 25 yesterday against the Jazz.

Denver comes into the Rose Garden on their second night of a back-to-back, though no starter for the Nuggets played more than 26 minutes last night—a key on the first night of a back-to-back and more importantly in this compressed season.

With the Trail Blazers running an up tempo offense they’ll look to win the advantage on the break. In the four games last year, the Nuggets won the fast break battle 37-21.

Tonight’s game can be seen locally on KGW with Mike Barrett and Mike Rice. Brian Wheeler and Antonio Harvey will have the call on 750 AM The Game and all of the stations of the Trail Blazers Radio Network.
