Mavericks Rebound Over Trail Blazers

  1. Written by: ShalamarClark  / avg. rating: 3.5

The Dallas Mavericks (3-2) jumped ahead in the series 3-2 after Tyson Chandler grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds and scored 14 points to beat the Portland Trail Blazers (2-3) 93-80 Monday at the American Airlines Arena.

Chandler had 13 offensive rebounds to help the Mavs outwork the Trail Blazers on the glass 49-37.

“I was just trying to be aggressive,” said Chandler. “Tonight was a big game for us and we didn’t want to go back to their place down in the series. We wanted to go up there up in the series and try to finish the job. We did whatever it took to win this game and we were able to knock down shots when we needed to.”

Andre Miller led Portland with 18 points and seven assists, Gerald Wallace scored 16 points and nine rebounds, and LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum each had 12 points.

Dallas held a slim one-point lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, when the Mavs started to pound the boards.

Shawn Marion, who had 14 points, grabbed Dallas’ third straight offensive rebound on one possession before scoring on a put-back. Chandler snatched three in the last three minutes that guided the Mavs to a 63-75 lead to end the third quarter.

“They outplayed us,” said Trail Blazers' head coach Nate McMillan. “We were giving them second and third opportunities and you can’t do that.”

Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 25 points, including 9-of-11 at the free throws, and he heated up for 11 points in the third period.

Jason Terry produced 20 points from the Mavs’ bench.

“We didn’t deserve to win this game,” said McMillan. “They got to their tempo tonight. [It was a] big game in the sense of having the opportunity to go home and close out.”

Brandon Roy’s heroic comeback in Portland’s Game 4 win at home that pulled the Trail Blazers out of an 18-point deficit in the final frame wouldn’t happen twice.

The Trail Blazers hit a cold drought in the fourth, making just 5-of-16, as Peja Stojavokvic’s three extended an 89-69 Dallas lead in the final four minutes. Stojavokvic ended with nine points.

“[Dallas] basically just dominated the boards,” said McMillan. “Tyson with 13 offensive boards and really those boards lead to fouls and also allowing them to get into the penalty early.”

Portland, which was limited to only one free throw attempt in the first half, finished 14-of-19 at the stripe and made 43 percent from the floor. The Trail Blazers had an off night from long distance, connecting on just 4-of-16.

Dallas, which shot 41 percent, took 14 free-throw attempts before the break and completed 26 of its series-high 35 at the line.

After a three from Terry and Stojavokvic gave the Mavs’ a four-point lead in the second quarter, Miller took over with a jumper and a three that sprung Portland on a 14-4 run to grab a six-point lead before heading into the break down 44-43.

The Trail Blazers led by as many as eight as the Mavs went 1-of-7 and Rudy Fernandez’s three completed a 13-3 run that rolled into the second quarter for a 23-15 advantage. Fernandez had five points.

“Let’s hope that it stays that way for us,” said McMillan about neither team being able to win on the opposing floor. “But, we’re still alive.”

The Trail Blazers will head back home on Thursday and try to even the series again at the Rose Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 PM.
