Trail Blazers Celebrate Sustainability With Fourth Annual Green Game Sunday

    NBA Green Week tips off with help from corporate and community partners

    PORTLAND, Ore. - The Trail Blazers will tip off NBA Green Week, a league-wide sustainability awareness initiative, with its fourth annual Green Awareness Game, presented by Stalk Market, Pacific Power/Blue Sky, and Allied Waste. Through the support of corporate and community partners, the team will celebrate sustainability throughout the evening as the Trail Blazers face the Dallas Mavericks at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

    With the help of fans, the Rose Garden Arena became the first professional sports venue to achieve LEED Gold Certification in 2010. The arena uses 100% renewable energy while diverting 80% of waste from local landfills through recycling and composting. 95% of food and beverage containers at the Rose Garden are compostable. 30% of fans that attend games use alternative transportation and those that drive hybrid or electric vehicles have charging stations available in the parking garages.

    The Green Awareness Game provides the Trail Blazers an opportunity to thank fans for the role they played in making the Rose Garden a model for sustainability, and promote ways for fans to reduce their carbon footprint, with the help of corporate and community partners.

    • The team has partnered with to encourage fans to consider alternative transportation with the fourth annual Bike To Blazers event. Fans will gather at the Salmon Street Fountain in downtown Portland and ride their bicycles to the game. Providence Health & Services will be on hand when the bikers arrive to give free bike helmet fittings.

    Burgerville is helping the Trail Blazers during the 2011 Green Awareness Game by providing 5,000 vegetable seed packets for game attendees.

    • Green corporate and community partners will host informational tables and distribute green tips with the help of their eco-mascots, including Bottle Bill, Energy Trust's Trusty the Dog, Friends of Trees' Tree, and others. The eco-mascots will be available for photos with fans at the South Atrium during pregame and at halftime.

    • NBA "Green" retail items will be available in Fan Shop, including the NBA "Green" ball, organic T-shirts, and a Trail Blazers Bicycle jersey.

    • A sustainability campaign featuring print ads and PSA's starring Trail Blazers alumnus and broadcaster Terry Porter can be seen throughout the week.

    • Fans at the Rose Garden can win gift bags filled with sustainable products through a series of promotions throughout the game. "Burgerville is pleased to be partnering with the Trail Blazers for the Green Awareness Game," said Jeff Harvey , Burgerville president. "The Trail Blazers are an outstanding organization and we see this partnership as an opportunity to make a sustainable difference for the good of our community."

    During the third annual NBA Green Week, which runs through April 3 - 10, the entire NBA family will team up to generate awareness and funding to protect the environment. Players will wear special on-court apparel, teams will hold auctions to benefit environmental preservation organizations, and teams and players will participate in hands-on community service projects.

"We all recognize the cultural significance of the NBA, and I applaud the league's use of its influence to promote clean air, clean water and a healthy climate."
