Rich Cho Is Having Discussions
08/18/10

New hires usually have some time to get acclimated before jumping head first into their new duties. Rich Cho was not afforded that luxury. After taking over in the middle of one of the busiest offseasons in NBA history, Cho has had to hit the ground running, though he's not complaining about it. Quite the opposite, actually.
"My background, having worked in the league since 1995 when I was an intern, and working in a lot of different levels, it's prepared me well for (being general manager)," said Cho after introducing new assistant general managers Bill Branch and Steve Rosenberry to the Trail Blazers' staff. "A lot of times when you're the No. 2 guy like I've been in the past, you're doing a lot of the work that the GM does also. A lot of it is the same work. Some of it is new, like the media piece. I feel like I'm well prepared for the job and I'm excited to have the opportunity."
So far, he's enjoyed the challenge of being a first-time GM who will try to do his part to get the Trail Blazers into their third consecutive postseason.
"The adjustment has been great," said Cho . "I'm real excited to work with everyone at the practice facility and I'm also really excited to work with people at the business office. There's good people here."
Good people, but if Cho has his way, there will be a few more "good people," maybe even great people, in Portland before the start of the 2010-11 season. After getting his inner circle put together, all focus is now on Portland roster, which some have argued is a bit out of balance with the additions of Wesley Matthews, Luke Babbitt, Elliot Williams and Armon Johnson.
"I've been really busy trying to improve the team," said Cho, "get my staff situated, put some processes in place and just trying to get ready for the upcoming season."
Like any good executive, Cho wouldn't elaborate on the specifics of what those "processes" are that he's putting in place or how exactly he plans on improving the team, but he did say that the team has been active in talking to other teams regarding trades.
"We're having quite a few discussions around the league," said Cho.
